Omelas is a city where all the citizens live fulfilled and happy lives. There is no disease, crime, or sorrow of any kind. On reaching adulthood, every citizen is taken into the dungeon of a citadel where they find a child chained to the wall. The child is malnourished, sick, and in great pain.

They know that if the child were comforted, the magic of Omelas would wither, and disease, crime, and want would become a part of people's lives in Omelas. Those are the terms, everyone's happiness depends wholly on this child's abominable misery and all people are aware of this. 

You are on Earth right now. There exists a button in front of you which would make Earth just like Omelas. The child who suffers would be randomly selected. 

You have recently died. You are presented with a choice: you may enter the ‘’Good Place” where eternal luxury awaits. There you will be able to enjoy limitless food, travel freely anywhere you want, create your dream house etc. Alternatively, you can also pass through a door where you can end your existence and attain  nonexistence. You can never opt out from the Good Place and you will exist forever.

For the purposes of this debate, “casualty of nihilism” (think Nietzsche!) refers to the activity of thinking about and acquainting self with meaninglessness and impending death. This is different with suicide ideation (which is usually a desire to die), but instead a process of philosophically understanding and delving into the nature of dying.

Eswatini, the small Southern African kingdom of 1.2 million people, has been governed by King Mswati III for 37 years after he took over from his father, who had ruled since the country gained independence from Britain in 1968. Tensions have been high there in recent years, especially since a crackdown on mass pro-democracy protests. 

“Operation Create Democracy” is a hypothetical military intervention by Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries to force Eswatini to hold democratic elections for its government and head of state. 

This operation is similar to “Operation Restore Democracy” in 2017 where Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) nations sent troops to Gambia to uphold the result of a democratic election and “Operation Uphold Democracy” in 1994 where the United States and Argentina sent troops to Haiti to overthrow a military regime that ousted a democratic President. 

The United Kingdom and Rwanda signed a treaty in December 2023. This provided for the transfer to Rwanda of all migrants entering the UK after 1 January 2022 arriving “through an illegal and dangerous route” and without a right to remain, with asylum claims processed in Rwanda by the Rwandan government

The UK’s Supreme Court had two days earlier upheld a Court of Appeal judgment that the government’s policy of sending back refugees was unlawful on the basis that there were real risks that asylum claims would not be properly determined by the Rwandan authorities, and that in consequence there were real risks of refoulement.

The ultimate decision lies with the Parliament and not the judiciary.

A recidivist is someone who has committed crimes in the past and has begun to commit crimes again, for example after a period in prison.

Robin is a death row inmate who is scheduled to die in 5 days. He is in prison for murdering the vice president's son. Dhruv, a structural engineer, is his younger brother. Dhruv stages an armed robbery in a nearby bank and gets sent to the same jail as Robin. In that crime, no money was taken and nobody was harmed. Dhruv believes that his brother is innocent and thus he staged that armed robbery to break his brother out of prison. Dhruv attempts a Prison break and manages to rescue Robin, but he inevitably also has to take another inmate, Kaushiki out of the jail with them or risk discovery. Kaushiki is a Notorious criminal and while on the run Kaushiki commits one murder of an innocent civilian named Pranjal. After 10 days on the run, new conclusive evidence comes to light, and Robin is proven innocent. Had Dhruv never staged a prison break, Robin would have been dead by then. After a few days, Robin, Dhruv, and Kaushiki are all apprehended by the police.
