The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) is India’s largest Marxist party and a long-standing actor within its parliamentary democracy. Ideologically, it supports a state-led development model as opposed to market led development. Organisationally, CPI(M) is closely linked to trade unions, peasant organisations, and student groups, which shape both its policy priorities and mobilisation strategies.
CPI(M)’s highest decision-making authority is an exclusive 17 members body called the Politburo, which is elected by the Central Committee in the Party Congress.
At the state level, CPI(M) has governed primarily in limited regional contexts, most notably Kerala, where it has emphasised welfare delivery and public services.
